Claim BREM - Elgin Marbles go to Greece

Category: News:World News JUDGED at 0
Owner:35
Judge:162, pseudo
created:1995/09/11
due date:2010/01/01

The Claim

This claim will pay $1 to every YES vote if by the judging date the entirety of the "Elgin Marbles" a collection of pedimental sculpture from the Parthenon of Athens, currently housed in the British Museum, are returned to Greece. The Greek Government must have ownership of the items. The returning party need not necessarily be the British Museum, i.e. theft by the Greek government will count for the purposes of this claim. Background: The Elgin Marbles were taken from the Parthenon by Lord Elgin in the 19th century, and placed in the British Museum. They are considered by many to be one of the most important features of the Acropolis of Athens (were they there). The Greek government has demanded their return on several occasions to no avail, and the British government has refused to return them, claiming that they are housed and conserved better in Britain.
