The Claim

Description: The United Kingdom will hold a general election during 1996. Background: The United Kingdom holds a general election shortly (i.e. within three weeks) after the dissolution of parliament. The dissolution of parliament must occur within five years of the last general election (April 1992) and is normally at the request of the prime minister. However it is standard practise for the dissolution of parliament to also occur after a successful motion of no confidence. The British Government currently (as at 23rd November 1995) has a majority over all other parties of 6. For the purposes of this claim a general election will have been deemed to have occured if polling stations in a majority of constituencies in the United Kingdom are open during 1996 (GMT) in an election for members of parliament in the United Kingdom.
