Claim DrkGOP - Dark Horse GOP '00 Pres. Cand.

Category: Politics:US Politics JUDGED at 0
Owner:38, highlander
Judge:97, Loophole
created:1998/04/01
due date:2000/11/15

The Claim

In the November 2000 US federal election, the Republican presidential candidate (the legal candidate as of the start of Election Day) will not be any of the following major Republican (GOP) figures: Newt Gingrich, Jack Kemp, George Bush Jr., Phil Gramm, Arlen Specter, Dan Quayle, Pete Wilson, or Bob Dole. (This list is meant to include major figures of the national GOP leadership who have held significant public offices). If none of these people is the nominee, then this claim will be judged true. If the GOP dissolves or fails to nominate a candidate in 2000, this claim will also be judged true. If the claim is true, YES coupons will pay $1; otherwise, NO coupons will pay $1.

Judge's Statement

With the clarifications below, the claim shall be judged as written.

The parenthetical comment is not taken as part of the claim. For example, if a "major figure of the national GOP leadership who has held a significant public office" is the nominee, but his/her name does not appear in the list of names in the first sentence, the claim shall be judged true.

The phrase "fails to nominate a candidate in 2000" is to be read as discussing a nomination for the year 2000 election; it is not a constraint on the date of the nomination. For example, a nomination in 1999 of Jack Kemp for the year 2000 election would imply a judgement of false.

If there is more than one GOP presidential candidate on election day, then the claim shall be judged true if any of them are absent from the list in the first sentence.
