Claim LinWeb - Linux dominates Web servers

Category: Science & Technology:Computer Industry JUDGED at 31
Owner:62, Alvestrand
Judge:97, Loophole
created:1999/05/13
due date:2001/07/01

The Claim

The IOS counter attempts to identify the OS of various hosts using peculiarities of their TCP implementations.

In April 1999, it counted more than 1 million Web servers in European countries and the .edu domain.

This claim will pay FX$ 0.01 for each percentage point of Linux servers identified by the first count of OSes on hostnames starting with "www" published after January 1, 2001.

If the judge determines that no such count is published before July 1, 2001, the judge may announce that the last number published previously will be used.

If there are important changes in who runs the count, the method for picking hostnames to test, or the method for identifying OSes, which appear to invalidate the number, the judge may rule that a previous count is used for judging.

If the count is not run, does not identify "Linux" as a separate category, or a single successor of this count cannot be identified, the judge may choose to announce that the last published suitable number will be used. This will not happen until July 1, 2001.
