The Claim

Netscape Navigator 2.0 contains Java wins on Internet by virtue of being ubiquitously available.

Java is a new object-oriented programming language developed at Sun Microsystems to solve a number of problems in modern programming practice. Netscape Navigator 2.0 contains Java among other innovations.

The Java supported by all eighteen platforms must be compatible. It must be the full implementation including multithreading thread and garbage collection as is found in HotJava.

The claim is YES if Netscape Navigator 2.0 (and or a 2.x successor) is ubiquitously available. To be ubiquitously available there must be ports to the following platforms:

  1. Windows 3.x
  2. Windows 95
  3. Windows NT
  4. MacOS 7.5
  5. OS/2
  6. Solaris 2.X
  7. SunOS 4.X
  8. DECstation Ultrix
  9. DEC Alpha OSF/1
  10. DEC OpenVMS
  11. . SGI IRIX
  12. . HPUX HP-9000/300 and 700
  13. . 88open DG AViiON
  14. . IBM RS/6000 AIX
  15. . SCO i386
  16. . Intel SVR4 UnixWare
  17. . Linux
  18. . BSD (FreeBSD or NetBSD) For a port to `exist' it must either be available for downloading off the Internet or be for sale at some price. The licensing terms and sale price of these ports is irrelevant to the claim.

    The claim pays $0.05 per platform with a $0.10 premium paid for all platforms.

    The availability of HotJava on these platforms is irrelevant to this claim. Whether Netscape 2.0 is the dominant browser at the claim date is irrelevant to the claim. The status of Netscape Navigator 3.x product or successor is irrelevant to the claim. 96/09/26
