The Claim

The United States sitting president on February 1, 2001 will not have gotten a majority of the popular vote in November of 2000. This will be judged TRUE if the president of the United States at midnight, February 1, 2001 was not the presidential candidate on a ticket that received 50% or more of the popular vote in November, 2000. Such cases would include:

  • The winner of the election receives less than 50% of the popular vote.
  • The head of the winning ticket receives 50% or more of the popular vote but steps down or is replaced before 2/1/2001
  • The US House of Representatives chooses as president someone who did not receive a majority of the popular vote
  • Death, resignation or disqualification of the president and vice president elect (so that neither of the candidates who ran on the ticket that got the plurality of the popular vote hold office the office of President of the United States)
  • A coup d'etat, delayed elections (beyond November), Martian invaders take over and cancel the election and/or presidency in general, etc.
